Audra Mcdonald is unique in the breadth of her talent and her versatility as a singer and actor. Her record-breaking success includes six Tony Awards two Grammy Awards and one Emmy Award in 2015 she was named one of Time magazine's top 100 influential individuals and was awarded the National Medal of Art, which is America's highest award for accomplishment in the arts--from the president Barack Obama. She's equally comfortable in film, television as well as Broadway. Her stunning soprano makes her a natural on the stage. As well as her stage work, she is also a prominent performer as a recording artist regularly appearing at the top venues around the globe. McDonald was born in Fresno California to a music family, began her training in classical singing in New York's Juilliard School. A year after graduating, McDonald received her Tony Award Best Performance for the Lead Actress of a Musical at Carousel for Lincoln Center Theater. In the following four years, she received two additional Tony Awards in the featured actress category for her performance in performances in the Broadway premier of Terrence McNally's show Master Class (1996) and the musical Ragtime (1998) making the record-breaking total of three Tony Awards before the age of 30. In 2004 she was nominated for her fourth Tony Award, starring in A Raisin in the Sun together with Sean Diddy Combs. And in 2012, her fifth Tony as well as her first win award in the category Leading Actress were won by her role as the main character of The Gershwins Porgy and Bess. In 2014, she created Broadway history and became an official Tony Awards most decorated performer in six awards for her portrayal of Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill the role which was also the vehicle for her Olivier Award nominated performance in the 2017 season of London's West End. Also, she set the record for the winning the most Tony Awards by a single actor. McDonald also has credits for theatre shows, including The Secret Garden (1993) Marie Christine (1999), Henry IV 2004 110 in the Shade (2006) Twelfth Nigh (2009) Twelfth Nigh (2009); it was her Public Theater Shakespeare in the Park debut shuffle Along or The Making of the Musical Sense of 1921, and all That Followed (16) Frankie and Johnny in Clair de Lune (192019) and Ohio State Murders (2023) McDonald first appeared on television as a character actor in The Peabody Award winner CBS series Having Our Say - The Delany Sisters' First 100 Years. Then, in 1999 she co-starred with Kathy Bates and Victor Garber on the ABC/Disney television version of Annie. And in 2000, she appeared as a recurring on NBC's popular series Law & Order Special Victims Unit. McDonald's Emmy-nominated performance of Emma Thompson in Mike Nichols' HBO film adaptation of Pulitzer Prize winner Wit was produced by Mike Nichols. McDonald's return to television networks was in 2003, when she starred with Josh Brolin in Mister Sterling. In 2006, McDonald joined the WB's The Bedford Diaries. The next year, she appeared as an actor in NBC's Kidnapped. In 2016, McDonald was nominated for a fourth Emmy Award for her appearance on HBO's Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill, a special film. The Bite is a drama featuring six episodes that are based on the pandemic that was co-produced through Spectrum Originals & CBS Studios. She appeared with Taylor Schilling & Steven Pasquale. She first appeared on the show as U.S. attorney Liz Lawrence in 2009 on CBS's medical drama The Good Wife in 2018 McDonald took on the part (now called Liz Reddick) as a season regular of The Good Fight on Paramount+ receiving 3 Critics Choice Award nominations for her role. The actress is currently guest on Julian Fellowes' period comedy The Gilded Age.
